Ranked among the top 10 live albums of all time by Rolling Stone, "MTV Unplugged in New York" is a live album by the American grunge band Nirvana. While on tour to promote In Utero, which had lower sales than expected, the band agreed to participate in the MTV Unplugged show. In a tense atmosphere between Kurt Cobain and the channel's representatives, they rehearsed for two days before recording the entire concert in one take on 18 November 1993 at the Sony Music studios in New York. Broadcast on 16 December, their performance allowed their studio album to surpass the million copies sold mark, as well as giving a new lease of life to the television programme.
