Nevermind is the second studio album by the American grunge band Nirvana, released on 24 September 1991 by DGC Records. Kurt Cobain wrote and composed almost all the songs on the album by himself, and the band began recording in April 1990 with producer Butch Vig, but the session was prematurely interrupted. Drummer Chad Channing then left the band and was replaced by Dave Grohl. The band also changed labels and resumed recording the album in May 1991 with new songs, including Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come as You Are.
The album did not receive any particular promotion, but the surprising popularity of its first single, Smells Like Teen Spirit, made it an unexpected commercial success for both the band and the label. It notably reached the top of the album sales charts in the United States, France, and Canada, and was also critically acclaimed. Nevermind has since sold over 30 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling albums in the world.
