Fables of the Reconstruction is the third album by the American rock band R.E.M. released on the I.R.S. Records label in 1985.
Fables is often characterised by a fairly slow tempo and a deliberately opaque, murky sound, which contrasts with the more upbeat previous albums. Nevertheless, the use of American folk instruments such as the banjo on Wendell Gee, and some orchestrations (strings on Feeling Gravitys Pull and brass on Cant Get There From Here) mark a turning point on the road that will lead the band towards the predominantly acoustic sound they adopted during their commercial breakthrough in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with albums like Green, Out of Time, and Automatic for the People.
