Tubeway Army was a London new wave band led by singer Gary Numan. Formed in 1977, during the height of the punk rock wave, the band gradually evolved towards an electronic sound. They were the first band of the electronic era to chart a number one synthesised track, with their single "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and the album from which it is taken, Replicas, both reaching the top of the UK charts in mid-1979. After the release of the album, Numan chose to abandon the name Tubeway Army and release his music under his own name, as he was the sole songwriter, producer, and public figure of the band.
